THE DIRECT ANSWER

Yes, when the purchase completes an evolution. Two eligible copies let you buy the third; one copy plus two matching shop copies can be bought together through a ×2 card. During combat, copies on the field do not count for this exception.

A full bench does not always block an upgrade, but the game checks whether the purchase can finish the merge. That is more specific than having several Pokémon with the same type or evolution family.

Case 1: you already own two matching copies

When you have two eligible identical copies, buying the third completes their merge. That is the full-bench exception given in the developer’s Guide. Count the matching copies required for the current evolution, not every Pokémon sharing their type.

Before purchasing, compare the unit and star state of the copies. A different Pokémon that contributes to the same synergy is not another copy for this check. If you are learning the general merge system, start with the evolution overview.

The expected result is an upgraded Pokémon rather than another reserve requiring its own bench space. If the copies are participating in combat, the next case distinction matters.

Case 2: one copy plus a ×2 shop offer

The Guide describes a second route: you own one copy and the shop has two more. The shop card marks the combined purchase with ×2 so both can be bought to complete the evolution.

Read the displayed price as a purchase of two copies. Having enough gold for one does not mean you can afford the combined offer. Check the card and your current gold before selling anything to make space.

For example, owning one eligible copy with a full bench is not enough on its own. The two matching shop copies and the combined purchase are what complete this case. One unrelated shop card does not create the same exception.

Why the same purchase can be blocked during combat

For the full-bench check, Pokémon fighting on the field do not count. If one of the copies you are counting is in battle, the game may not have enough eligible copies to allow the purchase while your bench is full.

Wait until planning before checking again. More generally, the Guide says an evolution involving fielded Pokémon waits until the planning phase. A delayed merge after a purchase and a purchase blocked by the full-bench rule are related, but they are not the same event.

If you want to retain a shop offer, the Guide’s shop lock keeps it for the next round and then unlocks automatically. Read the lock state before advancing; do not assume that refreshing or advancing preserves an unlocked offer.

Before you sell a reserve to make room

Check four things: the current phase, eligible identical copies, whether the card shows ×2, and the displayed cost. If those explain the block, waiting for planning or using the correct offer may solve it without selling a Pokémon.

If the purchase will not complete a merge, the full-bench exception does not apply. Reconsider which reserve you want to keep. Do not sell a unit simply because its type matches another: distinct fielded species can matter for synergy even though they cannot merge together.

Use the team-build decision guide to compare buying a duplicate, completing a synergy tier and buying XP. For Eevee, review the branch rules before the purchase completes its evolution.

Quick questions

What does ×2 mean on the shop card?

In this merge case, the game buys two matching shop copies together to complete the evolution with your existing copy.

Do fighters count toward full-bench purchases?

Not during combat. The Guide excludes fielded copies from that purchase calculation.

Does a shared type count as an identical copy?

No. Synergy membership and the matching-copy requirement are different rules.
